OK....thanks for everyones help on the forward and reverse. got that fixed.....Bad Plug on wiring harness... So I took it out today and it ran fine for about an hour then while tooling along at half speed it popped out of forward. I got off of the throttle before it slammed back into gear however, now at anything more than idle speed it pops in and out of gear. It only does this in forward I can run it wide open (if I wanted to ) in reverse. Please give advice on what could cause this. Thanks to all.

D.Reese
Check all the linkages cables etc (if it is manual shift).
If it is electric shift, check all wires, switches and connections. It could be a broken wire inside a wiring harness. Near the end of the wires pull on each one individually, if the wire is broken it should pull out of the insulation. Clean all connections.
If this fails to fix it, it could be a bad clutch dog.
But more info is needed,,,,
Mod#___________
Ser#___________

Give more info and get more answers
Richard

Re: 1972 evinrude pops in and out of gear

Thanks R.Wise It is a hydro-electric shifter I do know that it is designed to go into forward if something goes wrong. So while I had it on the water yesterday I disconnected both of the Electric solonoids to make sure one of them was not shorting out. This did nothing. it still would just pop in and out of gear even with no power to the solonoids.
