I have a 1972 65hp triumph I changed the lower unit oil and it ran fine for about an hour.then it started popping in and out of gear. I searched the message boards and determined the problem to be the clutch dog and forward gears so I disassembled it and turned the clutch dog over. I took it out and it still pops in and out of gear. I was wondering if the type of lower unit oil used would make a difference. I used an oil that stated it was recommended for all outboards including OMC. Is this acceptable or is there a specific oil I should use. Also could the wrong oil cause this problem. Please help.
