under the wear plate beneath the impeller the clearance for water to flow is very small, like 3/32" or so, corrosion here will block that off. Also, the thermostat may be bad and not opening. It tends to pack up with dirt and crap also there. If you never have, you should change the thermostat too.

Are you sure the little key that drives the impeller is in place ??

Did the engine cool before ?

Did you align the tube in leg with the hole in waterpump ?

Prior to the impeller going bad water came out which gave the indication the motor was getting cooled. During the tear down I checked under the wear plate to ensure the area was clean. Upon reinstallation I installed a new impeller key, impeller, housing, etc. I also made sure I aligned the cooling tube to the water pump housing. After putting everything back together I ran it the motor but, no water. The shaft was submereged in the water enough to allow water pick up for cooling.
How do I get to the thermostat?

You said the impeller went bad?? As in came apart? If so, you got to find all the pieces. Old impellers can stop up the cooling system.

The impeller came loose from the bushing however, it stayed in one piece.

If I recall correctly, the thermostat is under a triangle-shaped cover on the rear of the block above the cylinder head. Should be held by three bolts. You can test in a pan of water on the stove to see if it opens. How long did you run the motor on your test after installation?

I have changed the thermostat, water pump and made sure the tube from the impeller to the engine is clear. I'm still not getting any water flow. Any suggestions?
