The original factory service manual has complete, detailed ignition troubleshooting information. You can get an original service manual from Ken Cook Co., in Milwaukee. They are also on the web.

Re: 1972 evinrude 85hp coil issue

I have the service manual. I have tried coil test in the book but am not sure if its in latent enough terms that i am understanding. I have another identical motor on another boat that runs.Themotor has on the back 12 connectors for wires when i put my test light on the connections i get power on 11,9,8,7,6 on my good motor. When i looked at this one i found they all had power except number 11 I checked manual it said its the choke and the thermal switch when iniating the choke i see power on 11 only if i toggle choke. Could it be possible if the thermal switch was not working it would think the motor is hot and as a saftey mechinism disable fire to the plugs?

Re: 1972 evinrude 85hp coil issue

Some of these old engines had a warm up feature on the choke solenoid. When you flip the choke lever, the choke activates and full closes as long as the lever is pushed. When the engine is cold, and the choke lever is released-the solenoid may be activated to keep the choke partially closed. When the engine finally heats up to a specific temp, the automatic feature is disabled and the choke is released to full open position for normal operation. Unlikely this is related to any ignition problems. There are 3 major components which must be tested on the ignition system, the power pack, the stator and the timing sensor. Since you have the luxury of having an idential engine, perhaps an easy way to test for failed ignition components is to swap them one at a time with the other running engine.
