Ok, here goes. After a few weeks of lurking and reading, here is my 1st post.

I have recently become the owner of my 1st boat. It was quite by accident, it cost very little in money and was bought just for fun but the bottom line is I now have a new project to play with. I guess I will have loads of question but I would like to start with a few here.

The boat need some work to bring it up to standard, it currently having a new paint job and new windscreen made. Once this is done I will refit all the fittings and them put back the engine and the like put it in the water and hope it all runs ok.

I am unsure of the make and model of boat. All I can tell you is that it is 13' long and has a GRP hull. I have included a few recent pics (before refit) for you to possibly identify. I am told it is a Broom Scorpio. I have no Idea what year.

It has a 1972 Evinrude 65HP outboard as the power plant and it is here that most of my questions begin. The motor model is 65273S and the serial number is B1645.

The Prop is aluminium and carries the numbers: 382764 and 13 ½ x 17.

Is this a suitable prop for my boat? The RPM operating range is 4500-5500.

If not what would be more suitable?

I have not had the boat in the water yet so I am unsure about the WOT rpm.

I have done some basic work on the engine ready for going in the water.
The engine is currently on a stand in my workshop.

I have:-

Changed the lower unit oil. New plugs, and done some electrical work. The rectifier was faulty so a replaced it. I have also tidied up the wiring and general cleanliness of the engine. It has been greased and lubricated. I know this engine runs as I have run it briefly myself in a water tank before moving to the workshop. It starts from cold within about 1 second of turning the key. Compression on each cylinder is within about 4 psi of each other.

Any advice or tips would be most helpful. Thanks in advance.

Best regards

Ian

By the way:- Superb board!

Could well be a 13 1/4 X 17. It hard to read exactly off the prop.

What do you mean " The right oil"? I used Yamalube outboard gear oil GL-4.

SAE 90
API GL-4

The guy in the marine shop told me this would be fine. I hope this is OK?

Devilfish, you need to remove the 90W oil and install type "C" oil in the L/U.

This engine got a "hydraulic electric" lower unit , it does need a spesial oil .

It is called "Type C" or OMC premium blend , last time I bought it , it was renamed to "Bombardier premium blend " .
You can also use other brands BUT it shuld be compatible .( for use on Johnson/Evinrude/OMC electric/hydro-electric lower units, produced from 1960 ? to 1972 )
Do NOT use other types .

Hi,

Thanks for the advice about the oil. Any Idea where I can get it from in the UK? Have I done any damage by using the Yamalube outboard gear oil GL-4? The engine has not run with it in yet.

Any idea of what sort of top speed i should get with this engine / prop on this boat?

Hey Devilfish, I have a 71 60 hp with the hydroelectric lu and I occassionally run regular lu oil in it. You havent done any damage but it is not recommended to do it. My motor is on a 16 foot flatbottom aluminum and I run a 15 pitch prop with very good results. Runs almost 40 mph. but turns 6000 rpm. I tried a 17 and it was ok but a little sluggish on takeoff for my tastes and no faster because it lowered my rpms.

Re: 1972 Evinrude 65HP General Advice

You want to clean the carbs, and check/replace the impeller before you run the motor much.

I'd rate the carb clean as a 'must do'. It's not real hard on those triple carb 6hphps anyway. 2strokes heat up when they run lean. Old gas turns 'gummy'. If one of the carbs has dirty/gummy gas in it, that cylinder can run lean (forced to continue revving by the other two), and you will score the piston/cylinder wall. get a can of aerosol carb cleaner, pull apart the three carbs (in particular removing the float bowl) and spray out the passages. Pay particular attention to the main jet that is behind the removable plug in the bottom of each float bowl. Do this cleaning even if you have to reuse old gaskets. Afterwards, drain the gas at the end of each season by removing those main jet plugs.

The second important service is the water pump. You should change the impeller unless you're SURE it's been done recently. However, if you want to take some risk and run it anyway, minimally be sure your overtemp alarm is working, and check that the block is just warm to the touch (around 140 degrees F) when fully warmed up. There's no telltale on that motor. Pulling the lower unit isn't too bad on that motor (to change the impeller).

I won't kill it to run the regular (heavier) LU oil, but you want to change when you get the chance. If it doesn't go right into gear promptly, when shift, then you want to change the fluid soon.

Good luck. Those are great motors, but highly tuned (65hp from 50 cubes) hence the caution on the clean carbs. Post back if you have questions, or if this post is too confusing.

Re: 1972 Evinrude 65HP General Advice

Thanks for the advice.

Will be doing the waterpump as soon as the impeller / service kit arrives. Need to read up a bit more before I attempt the carbs. I would prefer to get a new set of gaskets as well in case the ones on it get destroyed in the removal process.

I must say it seems quite hard to get parts for this engine in the UK. Can anyone give me any Ideas?

The special gear lube seems to be a problem over here as well. Can't seem to find it.

Any more advice?

Cheers

Ian :)

Devilfish, running the regular gear oil won't hurt your lower unit, but what happens is it can clog up the hydraulic pump and the small passages leading to and from the solenoids. Or in cold weather it's just too thick to pump and the L/U won't shift out of forward. If your motor runs okay with it, just keep running it. Maybe change the oil more frequently than you normally would. Also make sure there is no water in the oil as this can prevent the solenoids from working properly. That L/U defaults to the forward position which requires no hydraulic pressure, so you don't need to worry about getting stranded if that regular gear oil you're using should give you problems.

I don't know where to get stuff like that in the UK, but if you're willing to order some from the states let me know and I'll post some places to get it. Good luck.
