I have a friend looking at a 50 hp 1972 model OMC with push button shifting,it is on an old tide
craft and we are looking for info about the motor relating to keeping it on the water if it breaks down? Can you still get the parts for the push button shifting from OMC and if so are they worth purchasing or does it come to the point that the parts end up costing as much as the motor is worth or they are only available used? Give us your opinion, it will see alot of time on the water. Thanks alot for the help.

Re: 1972 EVINRUDE 50 HP

I had the electric shift model in the 85 hp -- ran it for almost 15 years beginning when it was already 15 years old. I gave it to one of my son's friends this Spring, and it's still running fine. I had heard that the electric shift is expensive to repair, but never had to face that because it never broke.

Actually, if you work on these yourself, the electric shift components can probably be replaced fairly reasonably, I think -- based on what I read here. You can also be on the lookout for a parts motor -- not a bad way to insure you can keep your motor running.
