I have a 9.5 hp Johnson it is a 1972, 50th anniversary model. I am having a problem getting the motor to tilt. I don't know if it is just caught or what? I just purchased the motor and was looking for some help. I appreciate it!!!

I have the same problem with my 9.5. When it locks into place, you are supposed to be able to just push the adjustment knob in and it releases it, but mine is stubborn (with age i guess). I have to tap it with a hammer or something hard to get it to release now.

grease might work...

When you say "adjustment knob" what knob are you referring to? I tried pushing in the release lever next to the pull start and no luck. Is the knob you are speaking of down on the left underneath the motor? Thank you for your help!

Nicola Is quite correct. These motors are designed to tilt when in forward gear and lock down in neut and rev. Put it in forward and tilt away. Many older motors are like this.

You actually should be able to tip it up in neutral as well, but over time you find they need to be in forward to tip it up. It can be adjusted, but it is a bit tedious. In fact, if you look it up, you find the controlling wire is called a "reverse lock wire" in the service manual (figure 6-20) and "lever to reverse lock wire" in the parts manuals (see "stern bracket" diagram item 32).

If you had the tilt loose in reverse, everytime you used reverse the motor would jump out of the water.

Anyway, put it in forward gear and the motor will tilt up.

If it won't, look for something in the center of the midsection that looks remarkably like a bicycle spoke and trace it so that you can see how it works.
