I have never been able to solve the problem I'm having with this motor.
It idles like new, starts easily warm or cold, and has great acceleration.
It has been rebuilt by me. Has 155psi +/-5psi of compression in both cylinders. New good head gasket. Tried different used stator (same problem with both stators). New rectifier, monkey balls tested good. The timer base is old and the motor was under water before the rebuild, and it is still the one being used.
Problem: The motor runs great up to a certain point on the throttle, but won't run full throttle or reach full rpm's very often. Every once in a while, out of the blue, it will run wide open and have the power it should for a few minutes. Otherwise, if you give it full throttle, it will start to get weaker. Back off the throttle a little and it will run good and smooth and pick up a few rpms, just not as much rpm's as it should.
I've checked, double and triple-checked the timing. I've cleaned the carburetors and even soaked them in chemical the second time for a day and then cleaned and reblew them out, so I'm confident they're very clean.
Basically, the motor runs great until you reach a certain rpm, then kind of boggs down.
It also has a brand new fuel pump.
Do any of you guys have any ideas as to what the problem might be. I don't know much about timer bases. There is a little object on the timer base that I don't know what it does. Is there something about the timer base that might be causing this?
This motor is in good shape and my dad uses it several times a week, so I'd really like it to be perfect.
Thanks ahead,
JBJ
