Hello, I am trying trying to find out if a Johnson 70hp lower might fit my 1972 (50ESL72) 50hp.Johnson electric shift. I'm not sure of the year of the 70hp, but it is an electric shift. I just have an ebay pic.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Skyler

I don't have info on older motors but newer motors have completely different driveshaft part numbers.
If you think about it you are talking about a 2 cylinder to a 3 cylinder the 70 is almost 50% more powerful.
I'm sure someone will be along with more up to date info.

Thanks Spike. That makes sense to me. I can add that I only need the housing. My skeg is bent and I was hoping to find an undamaged housing. I may try and straighten the skeg, but that is another topic.
Thanks, Skyler

i have a 1972 50 hp eletric shift and a 1974 3 cylinder standard shift . the gasket is differen`t than the 50 . the 74 50 hp i have is different than the 1974 70 hp . the prop is the same . you can replace a 1974 50 hp standard shifi with a 72 eletric shift . you will ned some parts off the power head of the 1974 . like the plate behind the carb where the 2 cables fasten insted of the one cable hookup . also the shifting diode will need to be removed . the part where the shift cable and the throddle cable hooks up . the block is the same . as the 1974.
