Your best chance if you want to salvage that motor is to find a used complete lower unit somewhere, for that specific motor, and hope for the best.
Is it worth it? Only you can tell.
Can you afford a new motor? Do you like to work on old motors, and are you good at it? How good is the power head? How dependable do you demand your motor to be.
These are some of the questions that you need to answer for yourself.

I'm with Plywoody. Replace the gearcase as a unit and you'll likely be better off. I would say that a couple years either side of yours would work. If the mating faces, driveshaft splines, shift rod and waterpump stuff all mates up, it'll work. Most changes occured internally, while the external hook-up stuff remained relatively unchanged, with the exceptions being the fat lower unit "Quiet" motors, and the electric shift ones...
- Scott

I have a NEW 1974 J/E 40 manual shift short shaft lower unit in a sealed OMC box. Complete with driveshaft and all gears. Just as sealed from factory in 1974. In primer, just paint and bolt on to your engine.

Bought two of them to use as spares for my 1960 engine, but the waterpump structure is different for units after 1971, so I can't use them.

Would sell one for $200 plus shipping. If interested, let me know.
