1972 40Hp johnson dies going to idle after WOT

I have a 1972 Johnson 40 HP that will die out when coming off of WOT. Do I need to turn the adjustment needle in or out to correct this situation?

Try leaning out the carb a bit to see if it bring's the idle up, if you see no difference either the knob is out of adjustment or the carb is dirty.
