1972 40HP Johnson - chng Clutch Dog and FWRD gear HELP!

Hi there... first post for me. Great Forum<br />anyhow I have just purchased a boat with a 72 40hp Johnson Model 40E72. The guy I bouaght it from said it runs strong but needs the Clutch Dog and Forward gear replaced. <br />DO I just have to remove the bottom screws on the leg casing to access it or is it harder than that.<br />Is this and wasy DIY job I am handy and am willing to attempt it.<br /><br />Also dumb question where on the 72 Johnson is the Oil fill plug?<br /><br />Any good sites with manuals online. ANyone suggest a good place to get the Manual<br /><br />Thanks again<br />boatca

Welcome to this forum, and congratulations with your boat. Do you have a manual for the motor. If not i would recomment it.<br /><br />Is this a throughhub exhaust or not ?

Hi Boatca<br />This is not a real diffacult task. I would how ever suggest you obtain a manual. I would make sure all the shift adjustments were correct first. If you do tear into it, and it dosen,t look real bad, I would go for just the shift dog.

Just did a 35hp I believe where the bottom under the prop shaft comes off and it was real easy to do. I adjusted the shifter by rotating the prop and feeling when the dogs hit. It run out good and no more popping out of gear. Drives me nuts when I hear people easing those into gear. Pop it in quick and you'll never have to replace it.<br /><br />Oil fill screw is by cavitation plate and drain at bottom on most every outboard I have seen. I have a I/O where you drain it by the bottom screw behind the prop at the seal. The other oil goes in the gas for an old OB, right?

You can try Ebay for the manual and I saw some clutch dogs on there as well. Do a search for evinrude/johnson.
