Re: 1972 18HP Evenrude (Power Loss Problem) Please help...
That 18hp engine was the last year for coils under the flywheel. Where the coils changed when the points were done? If they are the originals and she has sat for awhile it's more than common for the fresh heat to swell them and break the old epoxy on them. Once they soak up mositure they will quit.

If one did quit she running on one cylinder. Get her warmed up so she starts easy then try starting her with one plug wire off. If she starts on one try it with the other one off and the first one back on. You could just pull one off while she's running, but if don't have insulated pliers you'll get nailed.

If I'm wrong about the coils and they are on the engine block there is still a third sensor coil under the flywheel that could be causing the problem. I just sold a 73 20hp and I think I read somewhere it was the first year with the coils on the engine block.

Either way the first thing you need to do is make sure she has spark in both cylinders. You also might want to be a little more specific about how the engine acts.

Yes, replace that hose if it look stiff or dried out. It runs excess lube oil to the main bearings.
