I'm trying to help a friend getting his motor running better.

We put his 16 ft bowrider in last weekend. It started and ran ok on idle once we figued out how much throttle and choke it liked. Once we got out on the water, it would rev up to half throttle. When we tried to go faster and gave it more throttle, the engine wouldn't speed up. I pumped the primer bulb and that seemed to do the trick. After he got his boat to his dock, he found that the tank was pretty ugly inside and had a small hole in the primer bulb. He went and bought a new tank and line, and cleaned and rebuilt the fuel pump. Now it won't do much more than idle. It bogs when you give it throttle and sometimes stalls. I'm leaning towards the idea that the carbs are dirty and need cleaning and that the guy he bought it from adjusted the carbs to run with the bad tank and line to get rid of it.

The other issue is that when the motor is idling, you can hear a clicking. It seems to be coming from the bottom of the boat. Can't really pin point it. When you put it into reverse, the boat doesn't really go anywhere and you don't really hear positive engagement of the LU into reverse. It moves really slow. If reversing into the wind, I don't think you would move. Here, I'm thinking that it may be as simple as adjusting the linkage to ensure that it gets into reverse properly. Hopefully it's that easy.

Any suggestions to fix this would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I think you are on the right track as far as the linkage. good starting point. Have you drained the lower unit to see if there is any metal coming out?
If you going to remove carbs for cleaning, you might as well by a rebuild kits for the carbs. my .02 cents

Thanks MD.

Will suggest the carb rebuild to him this weekend.

Haven't checked the LU oil. Will do next time it's out of the water.

The LU oil is something that should be done at least once/twice a season. If the old tank was full of garbage I'd take the carbs off for a good cleaning. I believe there is a screen inside the carb so that could be gunked up. Also did you open the vent on the new tank? my 02
