1971 Johnson Amplifier question

Had a break down a couple of weeks ago (Thanks for the tow Mr. Reid in Monks Corner, SC). Ignition obviously went out. Got home and just now had time to run a diagnostic on everything and have figured that I have a bad CD ignition module (power pack, amplifier, whatever). I had replaced the stock module with a CDI part I bought from Seiler Marine a couple of years ago and wouldn't you know it just went out of warranty. Obviously on a 1971 outboard (which is otherwise wonderful) I am having a hard time stomaching the idea of replacing this $250 part for the second time in two years. Does anyone have any ideas on a possible generic part that could be bought and converted to work or a less expensive ignition system that could be substituted? The CDI part # is 113-7123 and it is labeled Motorola/Delta Type Ignition. OMC part# is 389549. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

JT-

It is hard to swallow when you have to replace these powerpacks or in your case amplifier. You can get one at boatfix.com for around 200.00.

Post more info on your motor. HP , model number, etc. someone may be able to help .

Re: 1971 Johnson Amplifier question

I just found a company in Canada that makes an electronic ignition amplifier kit and it costs about $16.00 US (as opposed to $199.00 for the CDI unit). All its specifications indicate that it will work for this application. I know there have been a lot of posts about the price of these amplifiers and their propensity for failure. If this works, I'll post where to get it and how to make it work. Seeing how I got less than 20 hours out of my last CDI unit, I don't think I can go wrong.

Jim
