1971 Johnson 40 hp Drive Shaft

I am working on bringing back a 1971 Johnson 40 hp. I dropped the lower unit to do the water pump impeller and the drive shaft remained stuck in the upper unit crank. Please tell me this drive shaft is supposed to drop down from the crank like on the little engines...
Any hints or tips on removing a stuck drive shaft?

It should come down with the lower unit.----I use an adapter to clamp on the shaft along with a slide hammer.
