I have a problem with my outboard that keeps occuring. I have gone through 3 rotors in the past 2 months.
When I replace the rotor, the motor runs GREAT for a few weeks (about 2-3 fishing trips) and then it gets very hard to start and then it won't start at all.
Out of the water and hooked up to a hose it will backfire, but not when it is in the water under load.
Is there something causing the rotor to break? One of the "knobby things" breaks off. I don't remember which one (top side or bottom side).
My father in law mentioned to me today that he thinks that the shaft might be slightly bent and that "may" cause the problem. But I don't know if in fact the shaft is bent. I bought it from a private owner about 3 months ago. I tried to call the guy I got it from to see if he thinks there is a possiblity it could be bent but no answer ( I will be calling back today).
If anyone can help that would be GREAT!!! Any other ideas besides "bent shaft" would be GREATLY appreciated!!!:D I don't like the idea of how much that will cost!

What about the bearing the shaft runs in.?
It could be sloppy.

Thank you for the idea... I actually just talked to the guy I bought the motor from and he thought the same thing. He said it is pretty unlikely that the shaft is bent and the bearing being bad was much more likely. I very much appreciate the comment!!!:)
