Ok I was out all day saturday and amazingly enough I had no problems...Ya right!

At least until I was leaving. I was going to dock and realized that I had no reverse. All has been some what well until this point. It is a 1971 Jhonson 100 HP with the electric shift. If this is not an easy fix I am going to sink it.......LOL ;)

Howdy, RBedard. Your engine is in the gap between my manuals. Do you hear a clunk in your foot when you ask for Reverse??, Neutral?? Some earlier systems were normally in Neutral, some in Forward. All required a solenoid to pull in in the lower end to shift into Reverse. I don't know if that is any help or not.

Good luck.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: 1971 Jhonson no reverse

Hey Rbedard, I have an oldie but goodie also a 1978 235 Evinrude. I also had a problem a few years back getting reverse after I changed the waterpump. On my engine there is a shiftrod that runs up the middle of the engine. It connects to the linkage behind the carbs. When I had the lower unit off the outboard, I must have knocked this adjustment out a bit, this shift rod only has a {+ or - 1/32 tolerance}.After I put the outboard together, I was unable to get reverse gear. I had to adjust the shift rod to get reverse gear.It went into foward gear fine, but when you tried to go into reverse, it would just grind and not ingage into reverse gear. If it does not grind when you try reverse, than I do not believe that this is your problem.Hope this helps-Family Cruiser :)

Re: 1971 Jhonson no reverse

You have a hydro-electric gearcase. To get reverse you must have 12 volts going to BOTH wires going to the gearcase. 12 volts to one (green I think - can't remember for sure) will give you neutral. No voltage will give you forward. You can test this with a test light without the motor running. Let us know what you find and we can go from there.

Good luck!

Re: 1971 Jhonson no reverse

Hi bud--
Hope your 100 horse is like my 50 horse hydro-electric shift--if so there is a switch in the trhrottle quadrant, forward lower portion, that engages the throttle lever. The switch is roughly oval in shape, constructed of bakelite, held in by 2 screws, has a short arm with a roller on the end which is the actual switch, and has five wires coming from it--two white, one green, one blue, one purple/green...if this is the case then this switch has probably gone bad as mine did just a few months ago. Cost me $84 at the dealer, although I had to go thru about 5 dealers to find one. If you are good with a multi meter and have a manual you can verify the switch's operation (or non-operation). If I can help email me or answer this posting...Rich
