I have a 1971 6hp evinrude that I can't keep running. I can get it started with it is choked and it will stay running as long as it is about half way choked then it will just die. I have took the carb off and made sure the jet was clean. It also has a low speed needle that is adjustable from a knob beside the choke that I don't know where to set it at. any help would be great!

Start by reading Joe Reeves article on adjusting the carb needles in the Engine FAQs http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=167352

If you cannot get it to run within a small readjustment from the basic settings the carb is almost certainly not as clean as youthink.

It could probably use a carb rebuild. The task is not hard and the rebuild kit is not particularly expensive.

If I were a gambling man, I would bet that you didn't look at the high speed jet. It is deep in the hole behind the hex head plug. It is not clean. Betcha!!

Try right here at iboats. BTW - be sure to remove the welch plug in the top of the carb and get the passage completely clean.

I found the rebuild kits but i was reading that if they have a cork float you need to replace that and I can't find that. also do you know where I could find a the slow speed needle?
Also i could have easily missed something, but I thought that I got all the jets IDK though. thanks for the advice.

If you buy an OEM kit from a Johnson or Evinrude dealer, it will include the new style float. Or, you can just buy the float from them. The cork float was part number 375919, replaced with the new alcohol-proof one, 396514

Hopefully it stays that way. My 6 ran right for one trip after a carb cleaning, before I discovered the fuel lines were goo inside. Runs great now, after recleaning again, and replacing all of the darn fuel lines. Replaced the fuel pump while I was at it (it was full of junk, leaked and had a cracked cover also)
