I have a '71 Evinrude 60hp 60173C motor that I am struggling with. The engine has good compression on all cylinders and good spark on cylinders 2&3 but nothing at the plug on #1. I can hear a "snap" inside the distributor while turning the motor over by hand. I have switched plugs/plug wires around and the problem stays on the #1 cylinder. I have 1 new distibutor cap, 3 used caps and 2 used rotors and they all have no spark on #1 regardless of what the parts I use. The points have been cleaned and checked. I actually have a second 70 hp Johnson that had been converted to a 12V auto style coil and the problem stays on #1 when I use the parts I have on that motor. I am thinking the 2 rotors I have may be bad. Is there something I could be missing?

Thanks the help,
Kyle

Thanks for the replies. There is continuity through all the wires. I have tried switching other wires to number 1 with the problem remaining on #1. I can hear the arcing inside the distributor at the #1 position while turning over by hand.

Unfortunately I do not have spare points. I have cleaned and set the points on both motors with no luck.

Both motors ?-------Try switching position of the points on the 1971 model.----This will be simple when you find the issue.
