1971 evinrude 50hp.mod#50173s is not firing

my ole 50hp.turn over good but is not firing what could it be coils are powerpack need help (asap)

are you getting any spark or are you just guessing at coils and powerpack? almost everyone here is going to tell you to test for 3 things: compression, then spark, then fuel.

Andy there is spark so is there a test is can do to find if it is coils or powerpack

If you are getting spark on both plugs then coils and powerpack is good. Move to fuel, are you priming the bulb till it`s hard then trying it. Does the motor have a warm up lever and are you raising it when trying to start it. When you `push to choke`are the butterflies on the carbs closing.

sorry there is no spark on either coil i foregot the no in the last post so how do i check to see if it is the coils or powerpack

No spark right at the start of the PDF, you may need a DVA to test past #4.

i wouldnt do that.


i took my motor off the top of a pile of outboards for $150. dragged it home and it wouldnt start. no spark at all from the coil.


all it needed was the points to be cleaned. didnt cost me a dime to fix.

dont give up on it, keep looking and it may be something simple.

You could get a factory manual from Ken Cook and troubleshoot the system. Maybe it could be a broken wire or something simple.

If you are going to try to make this motor run again and have some mechanical skills you need the OEM manual. If you have no mechanical skills bring it to the dealer with deep pockets.

Steps 1-4 in CDI troubleshooting guide are FREE to do, I don't understand the junk it comment.
