Hi all, ive browsed the forums and couldnt really find any specific answers to my current situation. Ive had this boat since i was a kid motor was given to me by a family friend to put on my 14' aluminum hull. Ran fine when i got it, i let the boat sit for about the last 5-6 years after moving away from home for college. I went and picked it up to work on it and do some fishing. The pistons were seized but after alot of work ive rebuilt the block, put it all back together and now i have no spark at all getting to the plugs. The coils and everything electrical look brand new, no marks where the would be arching etc. But since i had the flywheel off i went ahead and cleaned all contacts, points, etc. Still not getting any spark to the plugs. Any suggestions?

90% of such problems, (wherever everything looks good but just doesn't work) are caused by dirty or corroded breaker points. Just last week, I found some brand new points that had an invisible layer of non-conductive film on the points. Once cleaned off they worked fine.

I suggest you remove the points from the motor and individually polish each contact shiny bright, then reassemble and set the gaps to .020" at their widest opening.

If you have a multimeter, check the resistance across the points when closed, using the lowest ohms scale on your meter. Should be zero ohms. Not a couple of ohms, or part of an ohm, but ZERO ohms. But this may not be conclusive if your meter cannot tell the difference between one ohm and zero ohms.

Update, i took everything off of the plate, and individually cleaned and polished up all contacts, coils, condenser, etc. I also trimmed a tiny bit off each end of the spark plug wires and now im getting solid spark (Thanks FR). I guess all the parts were good, its a good thing i did this instead of dropping 60$. But now the damn thing wont even act like it wants to start still. any suggestions to go from here? how important is the little black peice where the fuel filter is? is there a way to bypass it?
