1971 50 hp johnson water tube

I am having real problems reinstalling my lower unit, can't seem to get the water tube lined up. Is there supposed to be a guide on this, or do I just keep trying to do it blindly?

Is the water tube already pushed into the power head ?? With the the lower unit off ??

Yes, it is still attached to the power head.

The guide is part number 315838. It bolts to the top of the pump housing, above the water tube rubber grommet. So, where did it go? Well anyhoo, Marineengine.com has them in stock. You won't like the price, $50.80

EDIT: BTW, if I remember correctly, the guide is what keeps the grommet from blowing out.
