The motor developed a small miss at WOT, I never have gone over the motor since I have owned it (3yrs).So,this winter I rebuilt the carb and upon checking the points and coils, I noticed one coil is green and the other is a dark blue..Is it possible both were green?or one just got hot and discolored.
Or maybe different brands. Was just surprised at the different colors. Also what type of grease is used on the wool wick to lubricate the contacts
Oh yea, the points, coil ,etc..does look to have been replaced some time
prior to my ownership

Thanks

OMC has used about every color under the sun at one time or another. Add to that, the aftermarket coils. Your coils are simply of different age, replaced at different times.

In a perfect world, the wick would be replaced--it comes pre-saturated with cam lube (not oil). Otherwise, one drop of ordinary engine oil is enough, although the factory manuals say specifically do not add oil to the wick, replace it. On the other hand, aftermarket points come with a little capsule of cam lube. So, who ya gonna believe.

Hi do you still have this motor?

What did you pay for it when you bought it?

I have a lead on one of these and cannot find anything on the net about them.

I know I will need a service manual.
I am trying to find out if there are any known issues or gotchas with this specific 1971 25HP evi.

This is the pull start right?

Please contact me pm or on this board please, thanks.

I once owned a '72 Johnson 25 hp, very good motor. It's easy to buy an OMC service manual on ebay. The motor had a cranckcase leak when I bought it in 1983. Rebuilt it, ran like a bat out of hell.

I have a 1971 25 HP Evinrude and I had the same problem. I found that I had a short in one plug wire. Replaced the plug wire and the miss went away. Good luck

The old 20 hp I had began to miss really bad. I tried several things to fix it. When I went out fishing one night I went out running on 2 cylinders, came in running on 1 cylinder. I checked everything I could but just missed the problem. While working on another motor with firing problems I started swapping parts... FOUND THE PROBLEM on the old 20 hp.... the kill wire on one coil was pinched and the insulation had resulted in a bare kill wire. Now that old motor is pretty much torn into parts and I don't know if it is worth fixing now or not.... kinda a heart breaker... maybe I should sell it for parts or keep it for parts, not sure yet.

I have a 1975 25 hp motor that had a miss in as well. Turns out the top crankshaft seal was leaking a very small bit of oil and that oil was getting on the points causing it to miss. if you see any oil residue under the ignition plate, that could be the cause. For your sake I hope thats not the problem because its a lot of work to repair.
