I picked this up a few weeks ago. The hull is very clean, and even the paint is in good shape although slightly discolored.

Here is my partner in crime...=)

I'm leaning towards a aluminum hardtop, rocket holders, crab davit, and floor.

I only intend to install 2 captains chairs and keep the rest of the floor clean and clear.

The 85 hp Evinrude has a bad amplifer assembly (as most seem to), but otherwise is in decent shape. (minus the algae covered exterior) I also have a 50 hp Mercury I can use on it if i find otherwise about the 'rude.

Everything inside that is not aluminum, is going in the garbage.

Front deck and old foam. The foam actually had VERY little retained water. Could probably reuse it if I pulled it out and let it dry out. I'd rather just replace it though...to be safe.

Culprit. Was replaced and died again 2 weeks later. Company that did the work went out of business a week after the boat was picked up. Don't know why there wasn't a parts/manufacturer warranty that was used to get a replacement though. (it's been about 7+ years since it was installed) I'll be switching it to an MSD setup, to avoid ever replacing it again.

Nice hull. Being an electric shift model I wouldn't dump much money into that Evinrude but if it can be gotten running for not much coin I'd certainly run it till it becomes and issue. Welcome to the Starmada!

That looks like alot of algae....recovered from a rain forest or sunk at some point?
I hear parts of the upper west coast get rain most of the year...
keep the pics coming...looks like you have a great boat/project there:D

The algae is just from sitting out, courtesy of the Oregon rain forest...lol

I have a spare Mercury 500 that I will use, if the Evinrude doesn't pan out. I already had the MSD box, so all I will have into it is $100 in coils to make it work.

I forgot to take pics but the motor is off and the transom is out along with the rest of the floor.

Nice looking 16 SS I bought my last Boat a 16 SS from a fellow in Lincoln City Oregon , it sat next to the ocean, outside,, for 8 years The boat needed a lot of external work but it had a 50 hp motor that had that green look but ran and runs like a new one. Sound like you will be on the big water with yours, Have fun and keep some photos comeing. My Parents lived in Alsea and then Corvalas till they passed away. --- Pugetsound

I'll rarely take it across the bar. Mostly (for saltwater) it'll be crabbing and jetty bottomfish.

The boat will predominantly be used for salmon, sturgeon, and bass on the Willamette/Columbia watersheds.

Some see a mess, but here we see a thing of beauty waiting for the care and attention to once again ride the waves. Nice boat and welcome to the Starmada.

Yet another diamond in the rough. Strange how I smile evertime I see another saved tinney on here. Mine sure was in worse shape than yours when I got mine. You are going to enjoy restoreing it. Keep up the pics and keep in mind even though a hardtop lasts longer you have more convienence with canvas. (easier to stow or put up). Welcome!!!

You will have a nice boat when you are done there Veilside. It will be a good Columbia river boat as well as a bay boat. I am looking forward to getting mine ready to go but think that you will beat me there. We just might have to get together to do some fishing in the future as I live in St Helens just a little ways from the river.:D

I've been looking at fabric to decide for sure what I want, but right now am still leaning towards hard top.

I rarely store a top if it's on the boat. It would be on or off for me, so having the removable hardtop I think is the happy medium.

If it didn't rain here 9 months out of the year, I don't think it would be as big of a deal though.

I've actually been very pleased with the quality of the hull itself. I was not even worried about any wood/interior when I got it since it was all going in the trash.

We'll have to head out when I get it done Kelly.

Welcome VS and you don't have to answer if you don't wanna....but inquiring minds are wondering if you paid west coast, midwest or east coast $'s???
Example: East = $500, mid = $500.25 (or do I have it backwards?) and west = $25,000:eek::D

East ;)

Deals can be found if you are willing to wait for them, and always be on the lookout...even on the West coast.

Welcome Veilside.
Make sure to keep the wood and maybe foam for templates. I don't throw anything away till I'm done.

What's usable is already set aside. The foam was cut up into strips, so it isn't a huge help.

Unfortunately it's the wrong time of year to get noodles from the Dollar Tree.

Re: 1971 16' ss

I know that a few guys stuffed some of those noodles in the floor but I won't do it. I don't see how it can give you adequate boyancy because there are too many air gaps that would be filled with water. Heck, my 1983 SS came with poured foam under the floor, 2 large billets under the stern, and more on the sides. I doubt that $20 in noodles will keep these things off the bottom. You can easily calculate the displacement. 231cu/in per gallon H2O = 8.1 lbs If the boat and everything bolted to her weighs more than the water displaced by noodles....You know what happends next.

I'm planning on running the Owens Corning pink foam down the middle, and noodles on the outside.

Poured foam is cool on welded boats, but I don't want to deal with it if I have to fix something down the road on a riveted boat.

Poured foam would be good though, if you were to put down plastic. That way it would be removable, but form fitted.

You have angered the noodle mob......:D

First your calculation is assuming that everything in the boat sinks. This is just as incorrect as the people who assume that since 1 pool noodle holds them up in the water that it has 200 pounds (or whatever their weight) of flotation ability. Second, our older boats did not come with pourable flotation in them from the factory. Mine had this mess OEM:
http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/DSCF2225.jpg

I put 72 noodles into mine. Not exactly $20 worth.

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/DSCF2378.jpg
Thirdly, pourable foam has made a royal mess out of the newer boats. It's horrendous to remove if it does get waterlogged, and although we haven't proven it for sure, we are concerned that it has caused some corrosion issues. It also needs to be installed very carefully to not impede the proper drainage of the hull.
