I found a mid 70's Mercury 50HP motor for $600. It runs and has controls. Is this a good deal? How can I check to make sure there are no serious problems?

Thanks. :)

Hey jm,
Run a compression check. Compression should be over 100 psi in each cylinder with no more that 10 psi difference between any two. How much do 50 horse motors go for in your neck of the woods? I love those old Mercs. ;)
Backlash

The cost sounds on the high side of fair. I would expect a great runner for that price. There may be better deals but can you find them.... Autumn is a great time to make some boat deals, many eager sellers willing to deal.

I would also check the lower unit gear oil, if it is leaking or if it has metal shavings in it then you have some costly additional things to think about. Is it on a boat where you can test drive it? What hull would you put it on? You don't want to under power a large hull.

Good luck!

Kevin
