I have seen it said that the water pump (if thats even the right name for it, I have no clue) should be rebuilt at least once every two years. Is there any way to tell when I should be doing it? Or should I just do it now that I bought the engine, and do it again every two years on a cycle?

Certainly rebuild it now, since you have no idea how old it is. I think rebuild every two years is overkill, however, it is cheap insurance. How much of a chance you will run aground and pump some sand/mud? If that happens, a rebuild will be in order, more often than if you run in clean deep water.

Some impellers last longer than others.------------The impeller on yours should be replaced every 2 years.-----That is the way it is.-----------That motor has no overheat protection feature , shutdown or horn.-----------Cheap insurance every 2 years and very easy to do yourself as well

Ok, thank-you, I think I will do it, does anyone have a link to the proper rebuild kit to buy? Or would you need an exact year on the engine? Its a 1970's Mercury 1150 Inline 6.

The impeller was very common from 1963 on outboards and sterndrives.--Every proper shop will have it in stock !

You can find the stuff here on sale.

Click on the "Boat Parts & Accessories) and search for 47-89984 or 18-3017 which are impeller numbers.

At minimum you'll need an impeller, you may need more depending on the condition of the water pump assy. The pump repair kit will include necessary gasket, rubber bits, pump plate, etc, besides the impeller. More expensive kits include a new upper pump body with the stainless insert already installed. If your pump body is in good condition, you can just buy the pump insert and/or pump plate if they're worn.

If you're not in a huge rush, you could pull the lower unit down and inspect the pump, so you'll know what you need.

I recommend you replace the impeller, wearplate and the two gaskets that sandwich the wearplate as a minimum. A normal rebuild kit will come with these parts, plus two gearcase plug gaskets some extra gaskets for other motors and some Orings. Carefully choose from the gaskets to match the pump base and cover needs.

So, i was able to find the serial on my Mercury 1150, it is: 7131325. Now that is a Canadian SN so I'm not sure if that's different. Anyways I found this rebuild kit:
http://www.iboats.com/Sierra-Water-P...view_id.187580 but I am not sure if its the right one. Anyone able to help me out with this?
Hi there, The part number you posted/linked will work but it will come without a base or housing.

emckelvy has started you with a number to an OEM impeller only or the latest OEM impeller kit part number with housing would be 46-96148A8 which Sierra Marine equivalent would be 18-3517 - Water Pump Kit, No Base, http://www.iboats.com/Water-Pump-Kit...view_id.187581

Here's just the impeller, http://www.iboats.com/Boat-Parts-Acc...n_id.778648909
