First off, thank you guys for taking the time to read and help out people on forums like these!
About a week ago, I got my self a 1976 thunder craft for free! The only thing I really knew is that it needed "some" repairs to the deck and maybe some carpet. Anyways, I did a lot of reading on this site and it was really helpful in how to repair the decks and what not. Come to find out the boat needs a lot of TLC. I decided to try and meet the challenge nonetheless!! Sadly, my optimism was met with a mountain of criticism from the surrounding tragedy vampires that I'm forced to call friends. So, I am determined to get this beast back to working order, just to see them frown as i sail away with 4 fishing poles and 3 empty seats.
Sorry for the rant here is what I'v got to deal with. Please any input is appreciated.

I looked around and for the life of me could not find the year this motor was made! I wanted to buy a manual for it.
The serial # is (4578564). So I called a repair place they said it was between 1970-75.
Here is what it looks like with cover off. Looks like there was a short in wires maybe? and more than likely needs a complete wire harness. The motor itself is not locked up.

The wiring harness is badly split.

Last thing I'll post is this website I found. I think that it's the correct motor. Please advise!

I have zero knowledge of boats, What steps should I take to tackle this? I know I am in way over my head but I want to learn.
