1970 Starcraft SS 16' w/70 Evinrude

Purchased a 1970 SS with an older 70's, I believe 70 HP Evinrude last night. I was surprised that the floors are very solid, no soft spots. However, the Transom is rotted and bowing and the trailer will need some work. Plan for this year is to get the Transom rebuilt. When I was vacuuming out under the consoles I saw some pink styrofoam so I am wondering if someone redid the floors at some point.

The control box is a little scary, never seen one with push buttons before (forward, neutral and reverse). The kid I bought it from said he was told the reverse didn't work. Took a little gas in the carb to get the motor to fire up. Will have to do some research on the form to rebuild the transom and figure out how I am going to pull that 70 horse off. Any ideas on how much the moto of that age weighs?

Anyone familiar with the Outboard control box I'd appreciate any tips or an idea for a replacement.

Based on that windshield, (safety glass), I'd suggest that is a bit newer than 1970, maybe 71 or 72. Our 70 has a plastic windshield.

Use a "sky hook" to pull the motor, our Merc uses an adapter that screws into a large thread in the top, center of the flywheel. Or just use rope or lifting straps carefully tied under the powerhead. That motor is not too heavy.

:welcome: aboard! Nice SS you found there. Yup, that transom is in definite needs of replacement. Mine was pulled away from the transom just like that. I'm guessing your knee brace will need some repair as well but you might get lucky. You will find tons of information here on replacing the transom and just about any thing else you can think of. If you look at my resto link in my signature you will see how I replaced my transom and there are loads of others in here as well.
Your motor shouldn't weight that much, my 120 HP Evinrude is under 400 lbs. My flywheel has three bolt holes on it, I just put an eye hook on a puller and bolted it to the flywheel then used a chain hoist to lift it off.
I can't help you with the control box for your OB, you may want to ask questions about that one in the OB repair area if you don't get any help here.

Dan, thanks for the info, yes it is glass. How would I go about finding the exact year? There was no title, just a bill of sale.

Rob, thanks for the link. I'll be checking that out. I found a good link on the forms for the control box, the person was having the same reverse issues. I am going to start tonight with some "Type C" gear lube replacement.

Do you think two old adults with ambition would be able to pick that motor up and put it on an outboard stand? I've checked locally and all the engine hoists are assembled and they won't allow disassembling to transport and I do not have access to a trailer or truck.

A quick search brings up a weight of something in the 235 lb range. How strong are your old guys? You could make a simple tripod or gantry to lift it with. It wouldn't take much and be a lot saver, for both your back and the motor.
I put some 2x beams in my garage trusses that I use to hang a come-a-long for lifting stuff. It spreads the load out to 6-7 trusses and spreads it wider. It has no problem lifting a boat motor.

As for the year, I've recorded a few S/N's of boats I've heard of and to 1970 the numbers are up to the 990,000 range, 1971 is greater then 990,000. 1972's above roughly 1,000,000. Note that this is rough and in-exact. This would be the SC number on the rating plate. I couldn't read the number on your's.

I finished unbolting the motor this past weekend and my dad came over and we were able to get the motor off and onto the stand without injury or girly screams, :)It actually went pretty slick.

Spent about an hour drilling out rivets to remove the splash well and the miscellaneous screws from the transom. I ended up breaking all the drains for easy removal and will buy some new ones when the time comes.

Glad you got it off, that motor is between 225 and 235 on weight. That shifter looks like the old electric shift model.

Transom came out with a little elbow grease. The two "wings on either side of the transom were actually separate pieces sitting on top of the solid bottom. the rot was pretty bad, but all in all the boat is in great shape.

ETA: Yup, that hull is a 1974

"The HIN or CIN you have entered meets the Model-Year HIN format. It might also be a type that contains the country code and thus the boat comes from USA or Other . The serial number of the HIN is 93019 and is set by the boat builder. This boat or vessel has a Certification Date of (74) and a Model Year of 74 with month of build (February) based on the formatting of your hull_identification_number (HIN) ."

BUT, it isnt in the stock location (wouldnt have half-lapped a screw.....

whats on the paperwork? Title/registration?

somethings amiss....

That is exactly how my HIN on my 73 is mounted, it overlaps just like that and it has the same stamped font. On mine it is verified by the state as the original HIN plate.

I am betting that boat was made before 1974 and that plate was applied by Starcraft when it was sold to the dealer. I know my buddy who manufactures campers does the exact same thing, they will do a production run of 10 campers, park them on the lot and when a dealer orders them, then they apply the serial number to it for the current year, I know of campers that were made in 2001 and were not sold to a dealer until 2004 and a 2004 production date and serial number was applied to it right before shipping it to the dealer.

No title on the boat, and the young kid said it was a 1970. No worries, thanks for the assistance for the correct year, much appreciated.

That HIN comes back as a valid 1974 Starcraft Super Sport, that means it is a 44 year old boat, the standards back then are quite a bit less stringent then they are now a days.

I would simply have it titled and registered as a 1974 like the HIN plate says and not even worry about it.

Hey Kass,

Welcome to the "gang". :welcome:

This is the right place to be for information on your boat, and doing things right. I too have a 1974 SS16 that I am in the process of restoring. I am a total neophyte, but with the help I have gotten from this community (it really is a community, and less so a site) you should be able to do anything you want with your SS16 with a little imagination.

My identification plate was on the starboard side of the transom in the upper corner. After looking at your pictures, I did not see any signs that the plate was in the same location on your SS. The last two digits in the serial number provide the year. For example, the last two numbers on mine are 74.....

You look like you are in luck with your knee brace and splash well, both of mine required extensive surgery to make them right again.

Don't know how I missed that picture, but the year of your boat is in the yellow circle. I do not know what the "G" stands for, as that is not on mine (unless I missed it somehow).

I didn't take the time to read all this on the motor but.

You have a 1970-1973 Hydro electric shift 65hp motor. It defaults into forward as a limp home mode. I ran the dog snot out of one for years on an old trihull it never let me down. Was fussy about neutral and reverse sometimes had some interesting docking experiences with it. Great motor surf ebay constantly for a set of shift solenoids for it. At a decent price they are getting harder to come by. Keep it sealed and only run the specified gear oil for it nothing else will shift it properly.
