I am in the process of rebuilding by father's old 1970 6hp Johnson. I actually got another one (long shaft) for part but it stills works ok so I am going to use that for my aux on my big boat - so that is being rebuilt too.

Anyway, I need to replace the "HOUSING & RETAINER ASSY" that is found under the waterpump. I have a spare, however my question is - how do I remove this plate ? It wont budge when I try and ply it off. I was wondering if I need to firstly remove the oil retainer seal (314167) - but cannot work out how to get this off with the retainer still on the LU.

Lastly. When I ran the motor last month, I noticed a brown cloudy oil like substance dripping from the lower exhaust port when the motor was stopped (and also floating all over the top of my water tank). I thought it might be gear oil from the gearbox - but cracking open the drain screw show that this oil is still there (and does not appear contaminated). So is this normal, or do I have gear oil leaking from the top of the LU ?

That goo is unburned fuel and is normal, especially visible in a tank.I think you will find it smells gassy.

Those retainers can be hard to get off sometimes.
I just use a couple of flat bladed screwdrivers, one on each side, and work it up.
