Hey, I got this Johnson 40 hp motor this week. It's a 1970 Electrashift (Model 40ESL70A). It hasn't been run in about 5 years I am told, so now I am working through getting it back to life. To start, I was just doing an inspection prior to cleaning, and I came across my first question.

On the outer exhaust cover, there are two threaded holes. One has a fitting and tube connected to it which runs over to the carburetor. After checking the exploded diagram on Evinrude's parts website, it seems that the tube is part of a heat exchanger which provides warm air to the carb (I am assuming to keep the carb from icing). From the diagram, the bottom hole looks like the cool air intake for the heat exchanger. It does not appear that anything is supposed to be screwed into it, but I just wanted to double check, since it seemed like something was missing when I was looking at the motor.

Original Johnson gas tank that came with it. While I pressed on the tab above the fuel line, gas sprayed out, so it looks like the tank is still holding pressure (air/water tight) after 5+ years outside... nice quality. Still needs a cleaning though.

Thanks,

Also, what is the availability of Owners Manuals for these motors? Not the Service Manual (I have one on order and am working from the online copy at http://search.ebscohost.com/ for now). It would be nice to have the factory info about how to set up the motor on the boat, etc.

Thanks,
Tom

The bottom hole of the heat exchanger is supposed to remain open.
Even when new, that automatic choke never worked well.
