The engine is running great, I checked for a spun prop, it is new and perfectly aligned with the notch marks I made.

Selectric shift system...

I have the boat in forward, it goes about 5mph, same in reverse. The engine RPM's increase, but the boat does not go any faster... What is happening? Is there something going on in the lower gear case that I need to adjust, check, or replace?

Thanks for your help.

I have a 1969 Evinrude with solectric shift also. Make sure you are using Premium Blend Type C in the lower end. This is made for electric shift. Read the oil bottle on the back. It must say for older lower ends with electric shift.

Re: 1970 Evinrude 60hp Selectric

Thank you. I got the premium blend type C oil.

How many ounces does it take to fill it properly?

Also, the fluid that came out is a greyish tan. Does that mean it is taking in some water?

Thanks,

Adam

yes, water intrusion. replace the seal on the vent and drain plug, then keep an eye on it. buy several seals, they are a one time use only item.

NO, there is nothing in the gearcase that needs adjusting--or even slip for that matter. If it shifts through all the gears and does not make grinding noises, the gearcase is working as intended.

That brings us down to wild guesses. You claim the prop is good, which would be the logical guess, so we'll rule that out. A wild guess would be a short shaft motor on a long shaft boat. But you wouldn't do that (would you?). Another would be cavitation or ventilation caused by a heavy marine organism growth on the boat bottom. Finally, how about stripped drive shaft splines? You untied the dock lines, right? (Just kidding).

One minor but important point ... you motor has hydro-electric shift, not selectric. There is a significant difference in the remote control units for the two motors, so be sure of what you have if you ever have to replace yours.

There are also two different kinds of hydro-electric control boxes. The wire bundle on one terminates in a black plug and the other terminates in a yellow plug. Yours takes the black plug.

Could it simply be that I had the wrong Gear Oil in?

Plus, water was entering, would that cause some of the problem, too?

I will be putting in the type C oil tomorrow, along with new seals and testing it Sat...

Thank you for all the help.

I have the same motor and experiencing a similar type problem. It operates complete normal in forward but in reverse it is real slow with a lot of cavitation.

Any ideas? Thanks, Mike
