I recently purchased 1970 Evinrude 60 HP; model# 60ESL70B. I'm have plug wires on order (they were chewed through) and was scanning over the wiring diagram to locate the placement of some loose ends. I'm not an outboard mechanic by no means but I think I'm missing the amplifier and there is seemingly an automotive coil wired in. Is this possibly a conversion and if so, should it work ok & safely once I get the new wires on?

what you have is a Johnson going by the serial no . the automotive coil will work , every time the lube on the crankshaft goes through the points the condenser stores \releases the power generated by the magneto to the coil then to plug .

Ok, another forum member helped me ID it.

I'm not sure I totally understand what your talking about. Has anyone else done this conversion and have any pics or instruction to simply show how it should optimally be wired up?

That conversion scheme has been tried many times. I have yet to hear anybody say it has worked half way decently for any length of time. Even if it did, it will burn up breaker points. Check the price of those things if you want a convincer.

Okay, another thing. Below is the bundle of wires coming from the engine. Can boat wiring and the engine be wired to work?

Does anyone know what the white wire goes to?Also from the boat/remote I have a black wire w/ yellow stripe which I believe is the kill ground. So which wire on the engine should that go to?

Sorry for all the stupid questions, I'm just trying to come out of this deal without losing an arm and leg, otherwise I would take it to a mechanic to work out all the bugs.

Well, I decided to do a conversion too. I just bought a 1978 Johnson 70 hp to replace that one, but it needs a powerpack. Not too bad though, considering the pack is just $89. In fact I may be able to come out with a net cost of $0 after I sell the boat it was attached to and that includes the new powerpack.

Thanks for the help!
