I have just purchased a boat from a friend. He said that the motor was running fine. The boat sat for about a year and now it will crank but won't start. I took the motor to a little marina and the guy told me the motor would only start on either, that my number three cylinder is losing compression, and there is water getting into the lower unit. I am wondering if it is worth rebuilding or just get a new motor for the boat. The motors ignition was good the guy told me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 1970 evinrude 115 won't start

The Carbs. probably need a rebuild. They are most likely clogged up with varnish from the sour fuel left in there. As for losing compression, what were the reading? As long as they are least 100PSI and within 10% of each other, it's OK. The Water in the lower unit could be as simple as condensation or it may need new Seals on the fill/drain/vent screws. If he shot ether in it, I would'nt trust him anyway. Not good for the cylinders, espesially on a Motor that has not been run in some time.

snowrider,

Don't let the guy that is starting your engine with starting fluid work on it. He obviously doesn't know what he is doing.

Starting fluid (ether) is VERY detrimental to two cycle engines.

That could be the cause of the compression going away on one of the cylinders.

Re: 1970 evinrude 115 won't start

You guys rock thanks for the advice. I actually got the engine started last summer with some fresh gas b-4 I took it to that shop so I know the guy was kind of full of it. Is the 1970 envinrude 115 a good motor? It was pretty well taken care of. I am going to rebuild the carbs and look at the seals in the lower unit. Any advice on where to get the best deal on parts? Thanks for the help agian. looking forward for the weather to break so some boatin and fishin can get done.

Hey you all. I am looking for throttle and shifter cables for the control box to the motor. Any advice on websites or vendors? Rick the website you sent me worked out well. On that part number for the carb rebuild kit (7046). Do I need to get two of those kits? Thanks in advance.

It is electric shift. It needs one cable for the throttle

Re: 1970 evinrude 115 won't start

Hey ya all, Thanks for the reply. This motor I believe is a 1972? It is a manual shift since there are two cables? I have another question. I have an oppotunity to buy a 200 hp motor for a good price. I was wondering if I could just mount that motor to my boat. It is a 17' bonito bowrider that came factory with the 115. Would that be a smart thing to do or would that be to much wieght for the transom to handle. The year of the 200 hp is 1981 evinrude. Also could I put a power tilt system on this boat? Thanks in advance for your time.

Shortbus

Can you get the serial number for the engine? We need a positive on the id. For example , 73 is a better year than 72. The short answer on the 200 hp is an emphatic no. You need a big hull for that motor. Maybe that's an option, hulls are fairly easy to get and cheap.

SHORTBUS,

1980 200 EVINRUDE IS A VERY VERY GOOD ENGINE...
IN MY CASE, I WILL DO AS POSSIBLE IN ORDER TO INSTALL THE 200 IN YOUR BOAT, BUT MUST TO KEEP THE WEIGHT AND THE BOAT BRACKET (IN CASE OF OLD BOAT)MAYBE NEED REINFORCEMENT.
IN CASE OF YES, YOUR BOAT WILL RUN AT LEAST 45MPH.

THANKS

CARLOS

SALUDOS DESDE VENEZUELA

Re: 1970 evinrude 115 won't start

My 73 135hp pushes an old heavy glastron 17.5 ft boat at 42. 200 hp is way overpowered for that boat which cant be rated for more than 150 hp tops in my guesstimate. You would be illegal. Weve had a topic on the subject some 2 weeks ago, and many before that, so consider sitting back ,having a cool one and searching for some good reading.
I think my serial number is on the right inside of the motor mount bracket. Im thinking of refurbishing my permenant gas tank to increase my range and get the cg fwd as boat was designed for, but use portables for now. Portables definately have their advantages. I'd work out all other things first. If the boat is not designed for a permenant tank, might be difficult to engineer a good solution.

Hey you all. I don't know if those serial numbers are right, but I am rebuilding my carbs. I was wondering. should I coat the new gaskets with oil like a valve cover gasket on a car to help seal them or put them on dry? Thanks in advance.

shortbus
You will be looking for numbers like these to identify your motor. There is no '71-'72 Model. Put the gaskets on dry and pass on the 200HP, Way too much for your boat.

115083 115 1970
115393 115 1973
115493 115 1974
115499 115 1974
115593 115 1975

Re: 1970 evinrude 115 won't start

Thanks for the great advice Rick. The engine started like it was new. I have some concerns about the lower unit. When I hooked up the ear muffs I origianlly put the hose on the right side water inlet. I didn't see any water coming out of the back. I that switched the house to the left side and a stream of water came out of the left side from a hole. It looks like a factory hole not a crack is that normal? there was a little bit of spray coming out of the back but not much at all. I would say I let the motor run for no more that a minute or two. I am trying to locate the correct water pump assy. as well. Your advice on these matters is greatly appreciated.
