Hi All,
Got a question about the kill fuction on my 1970 9.8hp 110 merc outboard.
A little background info...….I picked this motor up a few weeks ago. Sorry no serial number. I know that doesn't help.
Please see the attached photo taken when I got the motor. The motor runs great.
Old kill switch did not kill motor, so I checked it with multi meter and it did not work anymore so I removed it.
I installed a new kill switch with lanyard.
From reading these forums this ignition is normally grounded and the original kill switch opens the circuit killing the engine. So that is how I wired up the new kill switch. I made sure I connected across the closed contacts of the switch with the lanyard attached.
But, when I started the engine and pulled the lanyard the motor kept running? So to verify the system is operating the way it should, I disconnected the new kill switch. I then grounded the ignition wire that was on the old kill switch. I then started the engine. Started fine. BUT, when I removed the ignition wire from ground, while engine was running, the engine continued to run?
So in the picture you can see where the wires run.
Two reds from stator go to each coil, one red to coil one and one red to coil two
Green wire from stator is tapped to two blue wires which go to each coil. one blue each.
Orange wire went to the old kill button.
There is a small blue pigtail wire which has a spade connector on the end but was not in use.
In a nut shell.....Motor runs fine with the orange wire grounded and with it ungrounded?
I now just use the choke to kill the motor but I really would like to get the lanyard kill switch to work. WHY? you ask. Well I had an incident where I ended up in the lake and the boat continued on its way by itself. BUT THATS ANOTHER STORY!!!
Any ideas as to why the motor keeps running with or without orange wire being grounded?
