This may help you... You will need a DVA meter (or adapter for a standard meter).

First thing I'd check is that you have 12 volts on the red and the white terminals (on the switchbox)... and the 11v on the brown that goes to the dissy. Make sure the mercury tilt switch isn't cause your problem too...

Re: 1970 650 no spark after rebuild

after reading some other posts and manuals i tried removing the tilt switch , still no start ,
i am using a 1971 flywheel on a 1970 motor , are the timing marks be different between the two ?

with all my timing marks lined up, i checked the distributor , pulld off the cap and found that , cylinder 1 at TDC the rotor is 1/2 way to the next post.
so i aligned the rotor at #1 cyl. then reset the timing belt to that position while keeping the cyl at TDC.
wich in turn changes the timing marks on the flywheel and the timing belt pulley.
no spark
IS THIS WRONG ?

then i tried a spark test , no spark all 4 cyl.

how do you remove the coil wire or the plug wires fron the cap ? i didnt want to pull directly on the wire . do they pull out ?

next thing i want to do is a coil spark test but i cant get the wires off my cap.

You need a manual before you start randomly changing ignition timing in the way you are going about it. Even if timing was WAY off, you would still have spark, just at the wrong point in time relative to the stroke. No spark indicates something wrong other than timing.

Flywheels from 1969 thru 1972 should all be the same.

The plug wires unscrew (regular convention) from the distributor cap and pull out of the coil. You will need to tug pretty good to get the wire out of the coil.

Re: 1970 650 no spark after rebuild

hi moody blue ,
i do have a manual its a seloc ,dont really like it though .
ive been rackin my brain on this , the timing adjustment was just a brain fart idea.

i think the guy i got this motor from lied to me, he said he was cruzin in
Tobermory before it hit a rock or something, cracked the flywheel and hub , the timing belt the skeg and the prop was toast. got it cheap enough to justify buying it and repair it. basicaly for the price of the trailer.

i got most of my top end parts from a lady in Tenn. on Ebay real cheap, a new internal harness installed that my wife found in Markham On. my prop i found in Dunnville On. for a Tim's coffee and a timing belt in Burlington On. for free.
i need to go over the engine wiring to check for more corroded wires .this morning i just found 2 distributor wires severley cracked and corroded and a ground wire too. maybe after i fix the wires she will fire up ..

im going to give it a break for a cpl days , machine a lifting eye , put the engine on a stand to work on so i have room in the garage. after my test starts the bottom end has started to leak oil a nice puddle over night all over my clean floor

then i will reset the timing, and start doing some diagnostics and troubleshooting on the ignition

this looks like a alot of work to do but i like tinkering on engines.

This is the 'link and sync' procedure... You'll see the first paragraph is how to set the belt... The rest you'll need once you get spark... :D
Read though ALL of it BEFORE you start... preferably a few times. :D
