Re: 1970 60hp johnson

Motor only has one coil to fire all three cylinders. Same with the amplifier. So it stands to reason that it is not one of those parts. Pull the flywheel and check for evidence of arcing in the distributor cap or rotor. Check the continuity on the plug wires, especially that one that is missing. Important: make sure the breaker points are set at exactly .010 at their widest opening. There is a silver wire ring on the crankshaft that keeps the motor from running backwards. That ring has to be lubricated very lightly with some EP grease. If it runs dry it will wear and the resulting dust created by it causes electrical leakage paths. If you are still trying to run the surface gap spark plugs that came with the motor, trash them and put in QL77JC4 gapped at .030. The surface gaps didn't run right even when the motors were new.

Try to run it at night and look under the flywheel. I'm betting you'll see spark jump from the distributor to the flywheel at the #1 post whenever it's running on two out of three.

o.k i tryed at night looking for sparking but don,t see any
so i swap plug wire with 1&3 and when i running it i pull one wire at a time and the only one that doesn,t make a is #1cylinder so i did a compression test and all cylinder is at 125psi at 5 cranks so when i pulled the plug which is new #1 still looked new and 2&3 looked used so i think there,s a fuel problem toobut i rebuild the carbs?
