I have a 1970 60ESL70B 60hp johnson motor. When I turn the key to on I hear a clicking sound coming from he stator area. Is that normal? Just bought the motor and want to get it running.

Also having trouble getting starter to turn the flywheel. It will spin the flywheel very slow. I have cleaned all connections and checked all the wires and everything looks good. Tried jumping the starter + on the starter and - on the block ground. Checked solenoid volts 12.7 into soleniod 12.7 out of soleniod. But I did notice a drop in volts when I turned the key. It would read 10.4 at all points. Any kind of help would be awesome. Thanks

take the positive stater wire from the stater off get some one to turn the key & hold it in the starting position you should hear the solenoid clicking in with the key being held in the starting position put a meter on the terminal were the positive wire goes on & negative on the block & see if 12v is coming through to the starter , i have had problems with the copper strip inside the solenoid not making proper contact when it suppose to bridge the current , dont take it for granted that when you hear the clicking that 12v is coming out of the solenoid

Re: 1970 60hp johnson starting problems

Hi, Woody.

Welcome to iboats. :)

A very common cause of those symptoms is hidden corrosion in the battery cables or their connections. They will supply enough current to click the solenoid, but not enough to run the starter. Take both cables off, scrub the connectors shiny and reconnect.

If that fails to make her work, go to Durban's procedure.

Good luck. :)

Ok I cleaned up the red and black going from the battery to the solenoid. I do have 12 volts coming out of the soleniod. It is clicking. Not familar with Durbans proceedure, can you explain that for me? Also is that clicking in the stator area normal? It sounds like a good spark is going on in there (rapid tick) while the key is on (not trying to start). Thanks for all your help.

disconnect the red wire that goes from the solenoid to the starter , get your m8t to turn the key until you hear the clicking , hold the key in that position you put the positive tester on the terminal were the red wire came off & negative the motor , take a reading then , if it reads 12v , all good then the problem in the starter brushes or armature .

Awesome thank you. I got a 12 volt reading. I took off the starter and sent it in to be rebuilt. I will post the results if the starter was the problem. Thanks again!
