I have recently bought a boat with a 1970 Johnson with about 8hrs running time on it. I had a problem with the electric start system on it I truble shot the system and found a burnt contact on the ignition switch and replaced with a new one, I thought I had it fixed and then the same problem occured. I would try to start it and some times it would work fine and other times the solenoid would not react. I could jump the solenoid and the motor would fire, then other times the starter would stay ingauged. So I bought a new solenoid and replaced it. Same Problem HELP!!!!!!!!![*]null

It sounds to me that your starter is getting ready to go out or your abendix (top part of starter) is bad.

Good luck!
Nick

Re: 1970 60HP Johnson Starting Problem HELP!!

Problem solved!! After a long conversation with my brother, we talked about the selonoid, I was trying to figure out how this selonoid would work without a ground. Then I figured that it would have to ground through the (S) pole, I traced the wire to a nuetral safty switch under the flywheel and hot legged the wire to a ground and it worked. I took the switch apart and found that one of the contacts was broke. Every once in a wile it would ark in the switch and would work and other times it wouldn't make contact. 60 bucks of selonoid and ignition switch and a 10 buck part was the problem. Thanks for the replies. and I hope this helps someone else. :D ;)
