1970 20hp merc in need of help

looking for advice, just bought a 20 horse and the lower unit has been drained for shipping, tried to fill it with gear oil and lower unit pump but after about 6 pumps it meets with alot of resistance and I cannot get oil to flow from top vent screw, is this common with mercury? all Ive ever owned before were OMC outboards and if you fill them from the bottom oil will come out the top. thanks for the help.

i under stand that it is. keep pumping is what i understand. it has to go thru a small passage.

thanks I will give a try in the morning, I was afraid of blowing out a seal or somthing becuase we are talking about alot of pressure trying to push the oil in the lower unit.

I just did mine, took awhile but just keep the pressure on. Remember to top it off with a small oil can to insure maximum capacity.
