So I finally think I have the kitty purring good, she'll start up in a tub at home and I'm trying to flex my work to be able to put it in the water this week when I just start it in the driveway and notice air pumping out of the bypass cover on the #4 cylinder. I start poking around and notice the gasket is basically mush and part of it pushed out. And the other bypass gaskets are mush as well.

Any idea what might have caused this and how I can prevent it when the new gaskets come in?

Were the bolts loose? If the surfaces are clean and flat, and the proper torque on the bolts, you shouldn't have any problems.

It could be something that is normal on a mtr 43 years old.
