hey guys, i need some help, my outboard will not shut off with the ignition switch, i was thinking of just putting in a kill switch.i was told to take a ground wire and run it through a toggle, and run it to any of the coil power wires, and that would kill it, is this correct?and also, this motor is on a 17.5' monark alum. bass boat, and it takes forever to plane out, and even longer to top out, this motor should be more than enough for the boat, itll do about 45mph now, but it tahes 300 yard!!! any help would be appreciated, i am new to boating.

197?? huh? The kill circuit was changed during the 1970's. Sure would be nice to know what year we are talking about before spouting off. Model number??? If that isn't available, does it have one power pack or two? If one power pack, does it have a removeable cover?

Ok, remove the cover from the power pack and locate the screw terminal with the black wire with yellow stripe. Without disconnecting anything, use a piece of wire to ground that terminal to a bare metal spot on the engine block or the negative battery cable. The motor should shut off. If it does not, the power pack is bad. Well, it's ok except won't shut off.

However, if the motor does shut down when you grounded the terminal, there is a fault in the wiring somewhere between there and the ignition switch---or the ignition switch itself. The next step is to open the control and ground the black/yellow wire to the black wire (marked "M" and "M", or "M" and "G"). If that shuts it off, the switch is bad. If not, the wires are bad. Or the plug-in harness connection at the motor.

Caution!! That black/yellow wire carries 300 volts. Can give you a jolt.

Caution and Warning!! Connecting ANY battery voltage to the black/yellow wire will damage the power pack. Be careful when messing around that switch.
