So this is my second time writing this, I spent 45 min. and then tried to preview it and it said I had to log-in, so here we go again, but this time it will be shorter.

Last year I got a free boat at the end of the season, I am learning that nothing in life is free, and it ran great everytime I took it out. In fact I took it out for 3 days on Baker Lake in Washington state and it ran beautifully, even towed my dad in.

I started getting it ready about 2 - 3 weeks ago, fixed a small water leak which turned out to be the water pump ($26.00 for a NEW one) but it was still getting warm so I tried to replace the thermostat but couldn't find one ANYWHERE so I just left it out and re-assembled. Today I took it out to the local lake, Big Lake, to make sure that it was running good for a fishing trip on opening day in a few weeks that me and my wife wanted to go on. I took it up to where it was getting warm last time and this time it stayed nice and cool, I was ecstatic, so the wife and I decided to just cruise around the lake and enjoy the day without the teenagers. We were about a mile from the boat launch and it felt as if I had hit a submerged log. I shut everything down immediatly and checked the water depth and it was fine, raised the outdrive and everything looked normal. Started it back up and it had a horrible shutter, ran for about 30 seconds and then it wen't to a high idle like it was in neutral but it was in forward gear. I checked a few more things like linkage's etc. and all was looking good, tried to get her to go a few more times but to no avail it wouldn't budge, busted out the oars and had to row my 17' boat back to the launch while some 20 somethings wake boarded around me almost as to laugh at me that I broke down with the wife in the boat....very embarassing but I was able to row back to shore and salvage my manlihood.

I got the boat home and took off the top of the outdrive and noticed that some teeth were broke on the pinion and that the oil when drained smelled of burnt oil. I made some calls on used outdrives and all I found was a reman out drive for $2,800.00 and that just wasn't going to happen. I finally got into contact with the owner of Allison Marine in Kent Wa. and gave him my boat info and he said he had an outdrive for my boat for $800.00, used of course, and told me to check on a few things. I took my outdrive off, yes I put it in forward gear before pulling it off, and immediatly noticed some more dominoes that had fallen. The bellows (sp) had water in it and upon further inspection the coupler was sheared flat. My guess is that the pinions blew apart which caused the steel splines to shear the aluminum splines inside the coupler and I'm guessing that the bellows (sp) have some sort of leakage somewhere, whether it is a hole or leaking O-rings.

My question's are: Are the prices I'm being quoted accurate or am I being taken advantage of. This is my first boat EVER and I know I can do all the work. I know I have to pull my engine to replace the coupler but I think that it is worth it to bring this 'ol girl back to life and save her from the wrecking yard. I love the boat and just the era that she comes from, I always get compliments on her and how good of shape she is in.

The boat is a 1969 Silverline DeVille with a 153 cubic inch inline 4 cyl engine with a Merc 1 era outdrive. MCM-120 power package. I just love the nostalgia of this boat, it's totally complete with all original equipment, I mean even the Bimini cover is in great shape and all original. The engine runs great and I just don't see any reason NOT to fix this boat. So could someone please help me out with maybe where I could look for used outdrives, where to buy parts, and what prices I am looking at. Maybe some hints as to what else should have been serviced yearly to prevent this or to prevent something else of this caliber. I have really put my heart and soul into this boat, I love to take out the family in it and enjoy our times together.

From what I can tell so far the major components that I need are a used outdrive, a coupler, and the bellows (sp).

Thanks,
Mike and family

Re: 1969 Silverline 153 c/u engine with Merc 1 O/D

ok... A few things..

A used drive is worth what you pay for it. The best option would be to get a brand new drive. Here on iBoats they sell them for $1299 -> http://www.boatmotors.com/motorparts/index.cgi?pid=7514&flag=2
You're also going to need (as you're aware) bellows, and I'd do the shift bellows (http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...&gd_poid=354338&gd_row=6&session_id=809999492) at the same time, and since you're going to have all that apart, throw a new lower shift cable in (best buy genuine, -73723A01)... As there was water in the bellows, a new gimbal bearing too (http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...&gd_poid=110244&gd_row=7&session_id=809999492)...
As for the coupler, the Merc part number is -76850A2, which is still available from Merc, or (much cheaper) on iBoats http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...&gd_poid=110300&gd_row=2&session_id=809999492
With an engine that old I would be doing quite a bit while it's out, like rear engine mounts (genuine is cheapest on this -865329A02), pull and recon the starter motor, and alternator. I'd also (if it's not already done) set up a spare v-belt in the front mounting. Definitely pull the exhaust elbow and check that (with a view to replacing), also the exhaust manifold.

I know it all sounds like lots of work (and money) but to bring an engine of that vintage back to reliable you are going to have to spend a bit (to save a lot in the future :D).... For all this you are also going to need the service manual -> https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B1TAvwZ3TjhfZTgyNWM4MjQtOTdhOS00ODEyLTk1OGEtOGIwOGYwNzAwNGEz (download and save!!), and an alignment tool (http://www.iboats.com/Mallory-Tool-...6203570--session_id.809999492--view_id.363793)

The other (but expensive) option is to drop a brand new 3.0 litre package in (it will fit in exactly the same hole, just a slight opening up of the transom cutout), and the performance change will be stunning, as well as the whole feel of the boat, and no more rowing in.... New engine -> http://www.marinepowerservice.com/BoatingStore/browse_detail3.cfm/productID/23391.cfm

I hope this helps you on the way to getting a nice old boat back in top condition (I know how it feels :D:D:p) ....

Chris....

I am so glad that I posted to this forum, I did not expect such a thorough response and so quickly to boot. What a compilation of information for me to consider, thank you for answering my questions in such detail with all the links provided, it's almost as if you had my boat sitting at your house. Thank you again.
