I have a merc 110 9.8hp. No serial number. I have it widdled down to a 1969 or 1970. I have read that the 69 was a "phelon ignition". And the 1970 came out with the "phase maker ignition".

so how can I tell which ignition I have. This should tell me the year.
thanks
Tom

If the coils are under the flywheel it is a standard Phelon magneto referred to as "lightning" ignition by Mercury in 69. If the coils are mounted to the rear top of the powerhead you have "thunderbolt"(phasemaker) ignition introduced in 1970 on the model 110.

RCO,

Thanks a bunch. I have the phasemaker ign. With the three hole ( choke, fuel, and kill button ) in thebottom cowl, I'm pretty sure it is a 1970.

Thanks
