1969 Mercury 800 series 80 horse/lower unit issue

I just recently purchased this motor, I was wondering if there is a way to check the motor to see if the lower unit is bad?
Prop spins freely, and I see no damage on the outer casing.

what do I need to do to see if its bad. Any help appreciated.
