ok, just put a new starter spring in and the manual gives a way of rewinding the spring with some wedges and 2 turns of the flywheel. well i did this and broke my brand new spring after 5 or 6 pulls. is this maybe a little much pre-tension, any advice?

I would think you over tensioned it.

It only needs to be tensioned sufficiently to rewind the cord and it should not be wound up solid when the cord is pulled out fully.

You working from a genuine OMC manual or some useless third party one?

Its a genuine omc service manual. Im gonna try doing half the amount i did. It was working so good though, such a bummer to hear that spring unwind itself in the housing.

Question back to you. Did the spring actually break or did the little coil that is on the outside of the cup straighten out and suck into the cup? If it is the later you can fix the spring rather than replace it. Let us know. The OMC manuals method of installing the spring is a good one but I have found it to be a little on the tight side and like Vic.S said it only needs to have enough to pull the rope back. Best of luck. Rick.

if the pin that holds the spring is bent it will not stay, have to bend it back.

it totally broke the first spring, so i ordered a new one and only turned the flywheel one whole revolution instead of the 2 and it still straightened out the new spring where it hooks outside the housing, thankfully it didnt break. Put it all back together and gave the flywheel only half a turn this time and it seemed to be the perfect amoount till the rope broke...... think i got it figured out anyhow. thanks for the replies.
