I have a 1969 (?) Johnson 9.5hp outboard that is leaking oil from the screw in the starboard side of the skeg. What is the oil from? What will the leak damage? And most importantly, how do I fix it?

I'm an outboard newbie so thanks for your help!

Welcome to iboats.

To start do you have a model number so we can verify your age before advising?

It is likely lower unit oil, from the drain screw. Do you have a pic? Could also be carbon, a fuel oil mix, which would be normal.

Im assuming this outboard is new to you? The lower unit oil has not been changed?

Yup, this motor is completely new to me. I have no knowledge of the lower unit oil being changed.

I'm assuming the leak is lower unit oil since it's yellow/gold in color and does not smell of fuel. It's leaking from the Philips screw on the right-hand side of the skeg. I'm not all that handy, so I'm hoping it's either an easy fix or a cheap repair for the shop.

The phillips screw on the side huh? Somebody took it out and didn't put a new gasket on it before reinstalling. There are plenty of posts here from people that have taken that screw out and can't get it back in. Proceed carefully. You might try taking it out just a few turns and get some permatex or something under the head and retighten. Might work, might not. Might make it tough to get out in the future too.
