I'm thinking of checking/replacing the exhaust housing seal on this motor because it's not running up to par. It seems that exhaust is coming up under the cowl and the carb is getting that instead of fresh air. It runs good with the cowl removed.

(Background on this is here: 1969 Johnson 9.5)

I've gotten an OEM sevice manual (I also have a Seloc manual) and looked over the procedure, but being new to this type of work, I'm wondering how much of a job it is, what to look out for, do I need any special tools etc.? Not sure from looking it over just how much disassembly will be required, I don't have the motor right here to look over and compare to the manuals.

Just looking ahead and collecting general info if anyone has done this.

Thanks.

If you are talking about the exhaust gasket that sits under the powerhead it is not that big a deal. If you have a decent manual you should have no problems.

hello
its a pain in the monkeys on that motor. be easy on the motor mounts cause some are NLA. you may look up all the parts to insure they are avalible still. BRP is deleting old stuff like mad. usually its the round ring that seals the leg that fails giving the same symtoms you describe.

Rodbolt thanks for the correction. I didn't look very good at the year of his engine. You saved him some time and misery. I'm not too proud to admit a mistake. I make plenty of them. Good thing we have pros on this forum to check up on us.

everything has to come apart. take off the power head and split the mid section case. its pretty time consumming.not really hard but it will take u a few hours of tinkering
