The motor seems to be getting too much gas. When I started the engine, it seemed to be running rich so I took out the bolt and packing on the very bottom of the carb. When I did this, gas was continously pooring out of the bottom of the carb, but It ran great with plenty of power. When I tried to put the bolt and packing back in while it was running it would run like crap again and stall out. What is going on with this? What causes this? I am I missing a part? I only have a bolt and packing on the bottom of carb/bowl.

There's something up with the float valve I'd bet. Possibly some crud under it, holding it open, and flooding the cylinders. My suggestion is a carb re-build and a good cleaning. If you do this, be sure to get a carb kit with a new float as well. Unless someone has been "adjusting" the needle valves, I'd do a re-build on the carb.

Yeah, Well its frustrating, becuase I just had the shop over in East Montpelier rebuild the carb but they didnt replace the float.

I know that shop. If they didn't replace the float it's because it didn't need one. I'm just a tad anal about using older floats when you're re-building the whole thing that's all.

Well maybe they didn't adjust it correctly, or it is no longer buoyent. I think the shop over in East Montpelier needs to do some follow up. Or some material of some sort has got in there

Well, if the the float is stuck down, than the fuel is going to keep coming in even though the bowl if full. So I guess i'll just replace float and hope for the best. Having the fuel poor out the bottom of the carb while is running is probably simulating what the float should be doing.

Check for dirt in the seat, a bad needle(viton tip) as in grooved. If dirt is found, check fuel fiter and clean out lines downstream of it. Also check float level. (invert fuel bowl with float still in place. Closest surface of float should be parallel to float bowl gasket surface. )

you adjust the float level. As for the needle wearing out. they can get grooved and won't close properly.
