I recently purchased an old boat, w/a 1969 115 evinrude, that has a bad amplifier. the previous owner installed an amp for a points based motor(85hp) i think, but did not install points, he left the sensor in place. He gave me an entire wiring harness from another motor, along w/a timer base w/points, and a stator. The problem is that I cannot determin if the timer base will work on this motor. The number on the timer base is 384550, which I can find no listing anywhere. I have 2 amplifiers for the points style motors, but none for the sensor. I would like to convert to points if I have all the parts required, I just need to know if this timer base will work on this motor. I have a picture of the timer base, but can't figure out how to post it.
Thanks

Re: 1969 evinrude

Ok, finally found what I was looking for on BRP parts catalog site. The part 384550 is timer base for 1971 85hp, and after looking and comparing part numbers between the the 71 85hp and my 69 115hp, the only major parts differences are the amplifier, timer base, rectifier, and clipper/ignition safety circuit.
Since I have all the above mentioned parts for both motors, which system is more reliable in the long run, and are there any gotcha's I should look out for before doing the conversion?
